Tree Health and Internal Decay Mapping

Tree risk assessment using PiCUS and ResiDrill

At Maythorne Trees, we provide professional tree surveys and arboricultural reports to support the long-term management and safety of tree populations. Our assessments include prioritised maintenance schedules and GIS-based mapping to assist with effective planning and risk mitigation.

Our reports help landowners and managers meet their responsibilities under the Occupiers’ Liability Act (Duty of Care) and can demonstrate to insurers that tree-related risks are being actively managed.

All our tree work recommendations follow the guidelines of BS3998:2010 – Recommendations for Tree Work.

We take an evidence-based approach to tree risk assessment. Each inspection begins with a Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) to evaluate external signs of health or defect. Where internal decay or structural integrity is in question, we employ advanced tree diagnostic tools, including:

  • The PiCUS Sonic Tomograph, a non-invasive technology that uses sound waves to detect and visualise internal tree decay and cavities.

  • The ResiDrill, a precision microdrill that measures wood density and resistance, ideal for confirming decay, hollows, or compromised structural wood.

These methods allow us to detect, map, and quantify tree decay, giving you clear, defensible insights into the condition and safety of your trees.

Whether for urban forests, private estates, commercial grounds, or public spaces, our goal is to make the right recommendation—preserving tree health while ensuring safety and compliance.
