Trees and Planning (BS5837 Reports)

If you are planning an extension, new build, or change of use, trees on or near the site may need to be formally considered as part of the planning process. Local Planning Authorities often require an arboricultural report to demonstrate that trees have been properly assessed and that development can proceed without causing unnecessary harm.

At Maythorne Trees & Woodlands, we provide BS5837 tree surveys and planning support that are proportionate, clear, and focused on helping applications move forward.

What is BS5837?

BS5837 refers to the British Standard “Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction”. In simple terms, it sets out:

  • how trees should be surveyed and categorised

  • how development can be designed around retained trees

  • how trees should be protected during construction

A BS5837 report is not about preventing development. It is about understanding constraints early and managing them sensibly.

What we provide

Depending on the stage of your project, we can provide:

  • BS5837 tree surveys and tree constraints plans

  • Arboricultural Impact Assessments (AIA)

  • Arboricultural Method Statements (AMS)

  • Tree Protection Plans (TPP)

  • On-site arboricultural supervision where required

Our reports are written to meet planning requirements while remaining clear and practical for clients and design teams.

Working with your design team

We work closely with:

  • architects

  • planning consultants

  • ecologists

  • engineers

Our aim is to help integrate trees into the design process early, reducing delays, redesigns, and unexpected costs later on. We also regularly liaise with local authority Tree Officers to support smooth determination of applications.

A balanced approach

Our work is retention-focused and evidence-based. Trees are often a positive asset to a development, and with thoughtful design and appropriate protection, many can be successfully retained. Where removal is unavoidable, we provide clear justification and guidance to support the planning process.

Getting started

If you are at an early design stage, it is often helpful to involve an arboricultural consultant sooner rather than later. Please get in touch to discuss:

  • the site location

  • the scale of the proposed works

  • any planning requirements already identified

We’re always happy to talk things through before you proceed.
