about

Maythorne Trees is an arboricultural consultancy based in Somerset, specialising in conservation-led tree care and the holistic management of trees, woodlands and orchards.

With the introduction of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) across the UK planning system, we help clients achieve tree-led habitat gains as part of development design and BS5837 planning surveys. Our work connects arboriculture, ecology and sustainable land use, ensuring trees contribute meaningfully to net gain outcomes while maintaining safety, structure and long-term resilience.

We take a holistic view of trees and their relationship with people, place and landscape. Through clear, practical guidance and detailed investigative assessments, we support informed decisions that balance environmental impact, ecological value and sustainability.

who we are

At the core of Maythorne Trees are Ian Chedgy and Jay Webber — arboriculturalists and horticulturists with a shared grounding in regenerative agriculture, permaculture principles, and community sufficiency. We are committed to sustainability, ecological resilience, and supporting our clients in creating landscapes that work in harmony with both people and the natural world.

Ian Chedgy holds a BSc (Hons) in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry, the Royal Forestry Society’s Professional Diploma (M Arbor A), the Arboricultural Association’s Technicians Certificate, and the Advanced National Certificate in Horticulture (ANCH). He is also an Associate of the Institute of Horticulture (AI Hort) and a member of both the Arboricultural Association (AA) and the Royal Forestry Society (RFS). With over 20 years of experience in both the private and public sectors, Ian brings deep technical knowledge and a strong passion for the conservation of trees and the rich habitats they support.

Justine (Jay) Webber holds a BSc (Hons) degree, the Level 4 Diploma in Arboriculture (Dip Arb L4), and the Royal Horticultural Society’s Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture and is a qualified QTRA practitioner. With experience in both private practice and local government, Jay combines a detailed understanding of trees with an interest in ecological design and regenerative systems with a particular focus on collaborative and sustainable approaches to land management.

We work alongside a network of highly specialised professionals — Ecologists, Pathologists, Architects and Designers — whose complementary expertise allows us to deliver fully integrated, long-term strategies for the safe and sensitive management of trees and landscapes.
