Tree risk assessment using PiCUS and ResiDrill

Tree Health and Decay Assessment

At Maythorne Trees, we provide professional tree surveys and arboricultural reports to support the long-term management and safety of tree populations. Our assessments include prioritised maintenance schedules and GIS-based mapping to assist with effective planning and risk mitigation.

Our reports help landowners and managers meet their responsibilities under the Occupiers’ Liability Act (Duty of Care) and can demonstrate to insurers that tree-related risks are being actively managed.

All our tree work recommendations follow the guidelines of BS3998:2010 – Recommendations for Tree Work.

We take an evidence-based approach to tree risk assessment. Each inspection begins with a Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) to evaluate external signs of health or defect. Where internal decay or structural integrity is in question, we employ advanced tree diagnostic tools, including:

  • The PiCUS Sonic Tomograph, a non-invasive technology that uses sound waves to detect and visualise internal tree decay and cavities.

  • The ResiDrill, a precision microdrill that measures wood density and resistance, ideal for confirming decay, hollows, or compromised structural wood.

  •

These methods allow us to detect, map, and quantify tree decay, giving you clear, defensible insights into the condition and safety of your trees.

Whether for urban forests, private estates, commercial grounds, or public spaces, our goal is to make the right recommendation—preserving tree health while ensuring safety and compliance.

Tree Surveys and Report Writing Services -
Planning, Trees in Conservation Areas, Tree Preservation Orders and Felling Licences

Planning applications that may affect trees are required to include a tree report to assess the impact the proposed development may have on those trees.  These reports are to be carried out in accordance with BS5837: 2012 Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction.

We are able to assist and undertake all stages of this process including; tree constraints plan, arboricultural impacts assessments, tree protection plans and construction methods statements.

We are experienced in making applications to work on trees with regards to trees in Conservation Areas and trees protected by Tree Proteciton Orders, where necessary.

We have extensive experience in the preparation of Felling License applications for both disease management and timber harvesting.

Woodland Management

Woodland management is essential to support our native woodlands in the face of climate crisis and the increasing prevalence of invasive pests and diseases.  We believe that a well managed woodland can be stable and strong, supporting biodiversity and the wider environment.  Woodland management can support a number of objectives - recreational, conservation and financial through sustainable timber production,

We are able to comprehensively help at every stage, from felling license application, woodland creation grants and funding applications, the design process, site preparation, sourcing the trees, tools required, and post-planting care.
